Hey, if you think you've got some sweet shit plans, post away.
Please, don't ask questions, or complain about stuff, this is an area for plans and discussing plans.
By the way, pictures are very helpful, try not to post plans that are just a muddle of words.

Hey, I'm toying with ideas for HROF (high rate of fire) potato cannons.
Reloading ammo is not a problem but propulsion is.
I've been think about C02 tanks and such, along with something that uses blank gun shells to propel the potato. Another idea is to have a thingy that has both projectile and propellant in a package that is loaded into or secured onto the barrel.
I will post some sketch ups, but I'd like some feed back.

How high of a rate of fire are we talking here? Can't you just load more than one tater at a time? And up the pressure a lot to make them come out faster and harder? Like a tater machine gun? (Not that I know anything about potato cannons... ) Sketchups would be nice.

High rate of fire is a relative term.
I have only ever seen ONE semi-auto spud gun.
So high rate of fire could be anywhere from 1 shot/2 seconds up to semi-automatic.
Fully automatic is like the Holy Grail of Spud Guns.

Here is an article on paintball guns.
This would be the principle a cannon with an air tank would work under.
The 3-D model is good for showing the mechanics.

You are suggesting that multiple spuds are loaded and then fired at once?
Well, that works, but I'm talking something that ISN'T pressurize, then fire, pressurize, then fire, over and over again.
I'm talking, like, aim, shoot, reload, aim, shoot again. No pressurization in between shots (even if a shot has multiple projectiles).

No, I mean load, say, five taters into the barrel. Then pressurize into a separate chamber. Then turn a valve that releases the pressure into the barrel which launches the taters. If you had a high enough pressure, wouldn't all of them launch?

Yeah, I understand what you're saying, but that's like loading 3 bullets into a gun and pulling the trigger once to fire them all. Now imagine that gun didn't allow you to pull the trigger again for another five minutes. You wouldn't say it has a high rate of fire. That is basically what you're suggesting. I want something that pressurizes quickly, ammo reloading speed is not a problem.

Gotcha.
Well how do you make it pressurize faster?

I'm not aiming for faster pressurization (too loud, too expensive, and still, too long).
I'm going for more shots on one pressurization.
Right now I'm looking at paintball tanks and other stuff.

I didn't think so.
I though you meant, just load more projectiles into the barrel, it'd be the same amount of pressurizations and time for pressurization but more projectiles fired on one of those pressurizations.

Okay, the plans are coming together in my head.
I only need to find a valve that opens for a very short period of time (so only a little bit of air get through).
Any suggestions people?

I think you should post some sketchums, that would help me for one visualize this process.

*sigh*
Obviously I'm not making my point...
I won't make it pressurize FASTER.
I'm just gonna make it so that on one tank of pressurized air or C02, you'll get more than one shot.

Okay, so that paintball mechanism would be very difficult to fabricate on my own. I don't really want to shell 100 bucks on a paintball gun just to kill it for it's firing mechanism (besides, more fun to build it yourself).
Hmmm, anybody, seriously, I need suggestions.
